Johnno is Maloufs first novel and is written in the first person past tense and the narrator is only ever known by the nickname "Dante". Apparently the book is very heavily autobiographical.

It starts with Dante clearing out his father's house after his death. He finds a photograph of his friend Johnno, and the rest is for the most part reverie/5. Dante and Johnno are unlikely childhood friends, growing up in the bustle of steamy, wartime Brisbane. Later, as teenagers, they learn about love and life amidst the city's pubs and public libraries, backyards and brothels, Moreton Bay figs and tennis parties.

Johnno himself is a wonderful character. He is eccentric, misunderstood and probably depressed. He is larger than life. He is full of vitality. Johnno has a strange magnetism about him. This is a slim book of less than pages. However, the book heaves with charm.

It is a beautiful piece of modern Australian fiction. Highly recommended.5/5(4). Johnno by David Malouf, available at Book Depository with free delivery worldwide/5(). Johnno is a little gem, a wonderful chronicling of a young man's coming of age, and his relationship with Johnno, a slightly troubled young man, in Brisbane right after World War II.

David Malouf is a wonderful writer. Each sentence is a work of art--but nothing is too precious, too anything. It's an enjoyable book that I highly recommend/5(4). Despite Johnno's assertion that Brisbane was absolutely the ugliest place in the world, I had the feeling as I walked across deserted intersections, past empty parks with their tropical trees all spiked and sharp-edged in the early sunlight, that it might even be beautiful 'Johnno is a typical Australian who refuses to be typical.

His disorderly presence can disturb the staleness /5(4). Johnno's father was one of those who stayed missing. And the reason for Johnno's wildness, it was universally agreed, was that he was a war child.

In the years when it really matters he had lacked the benefit of a restraining hand. Our own father was too old for the war, so we did have the benefit of his restraining : Free download or read online Johnno pdf (ePUB) book. Johnno has books on Goodreads. The main focus of the book is the very complex relationship between two very different boys. Johnno, who is the an intelligent, but reckless, unsettled and wild personality, and the main character who is dubbed Professor or Dante by Johnno based on his intelligence, academic achievements and “wise” decisions.

Johnno is a typical Australian who refuses to be typical. Seen through the eyes of the narrator, he is a figure of legendary proportions. His disorderly presence can disturb the staleness of gothic Brisbane, or destroy the tranquillity of a Greek landscape. As he said in the book "this was a joke with a time fuse" but it also ensured that the book that David had in his head about his friend would finally be written.
